Unilever product recall cancer causing agent haircare switch to organic
Recently, there was big news regarding FMCG giant Unilever recalling its dry shampoos from across the globe due to the high presence of cancer-causing agents like benzene etc in its products. We are talking about age old brands like Dove and Tresemme, who have been producing and selling these shampoos for decades now. The companies spend millions of dollars on Research & Development yet at the end of the day betray the trust of their consumers. This news leaves much to be desired in the personal-care market segment but there is a ray of hope. First, let's dig a little deeper into the issue.
Why the dry shampoo is being withdrawn?
For this, we first have to understand what dry shampoo is!
Dry shampoo is a product to absorb the dirt, oil, and grease of your scalp without washing it. Many people use it to freshen their hair after working out, or a humid commute etc
Is it really bad?
Dry shampoo uses starch or alcohol which leaves residue on the scalp that builds up over time causing inflammation of hair follicles and rashes.
What led FMCG giant ‘Unilever’ to recall its dry shampoo across all global markets?
The voluntary recall comes after Unilever's internal investigation found potentially elevated levels of benzene in some products. Benzene causes harmful effects on the bone marrow and can cause a decrease in red blood cells, leading to anemia. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, exposure to benzene, which is classified as a human carcinogen, can occur through inhalation, ingestion, or through skin contact and can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancers.
This isn’t the first time spray-on dry shampoo has been identified as a problem. P&G tested its whole portfolio of aerosol products following Valisure’s findings. The company then recalled its Pantene and Herbal Essences dry shampoos in December, citing benzene contamination. The recalls were set off by findings of benzene in such products by an analytical lab called Valisure.
Why choose natural products for hair cleansing?
For ages, traditional hair cleansing has involved using plant-based products like shikakai, reetha, amla, honey, and natural surfactants that not only remove dirt, and infection but also give natural shine and strength without harming the hair. Chemical components like Benzene and its derivatives, Parabens,  and Diethanolamine present in hair cleansers these days promise quick action at the cost of loss of hair quality, and moisture, resulting in hair fall and premature greying of hair over time.
What makes products at Forestry India different?
Our hair cleansers and hair masks are strictly free of all harmful chemicals which damage your hair, skin and health. These include not just Benzene but also parabens, Diethanolamine, heavy metals, Phthalates, micro-plastics, Polyethylene Glycol (PEG), Sulphate based surfactants like SLS/SLES. Our products are made with only natural ingredients sourced carefully from the purest of places and designed to give long-lasting impact on your hair.
The choice is yours! Ditch the cancer-causing personal care and cosmetic products and adopt natural products in your lifestyle from today itself!
